U.S. Passport Application – Receive One Ahead Of Time

July 29th, 2010 No comments

As with anything governmental, there are forms and usually a few different varieties. When it comes to passports, there are a few different varieties and choosing the right USA Passport application may depend on a wide range of factors. Here are a few tips to help you narrow down which form will be correct for your needs.

The Standard DS-11 passport application forms are the correct forms for first time applicants. The Standard DS-11 form gives the guidelines and information correctly submitting necessary pieces of information and basic information regarding the individual applying. For first time applicants, whether adults and minors, this form will direct the applicant to any other documents or information needed to complete the application process.

In order to renew an already existing passport, an individual will need to complete a DS-82 form. This form asks for much of the same information that is already on the passport as a method of confirming that nothing has changed for the holder since its initial issue date. The form is standard and will need to be accompanied by the old passport when sent in for processing.

A lost or stolen passport requires filing two forms, the DS-11 and the DS-64. The DS-11, as stated earlier, is the actual application and the DS-64 is a report as to how and when the original passport was discovered to be missing. These both need to be filled out completely and sent in for the issuing agency to record the loss properly, should the old passport resurface at some point. If the old passport is found after the replacement is issued, it will need to be sent in to be cancelled properly and will be returned to the passport holder.

For an information update or a name change, a DS-5504 form needs to be completed. The existing passport must be sent in with this form with proper documentation supporting any changes to the agency that issued the original passport. A Court document or marriage certificate that has been certified by the Court must be submitted for individuals that have married or had a legal name change.

To request that additional pages be added to an existing passport, complete a DS-4085 form. In order to qualify for addition of new pages, the old passport must contain between two and four unused pages. The passport must be submitted with the DS-4085 form. The passport book containing the additional pages will then be returned to the passport holder.

A few common items go along with many of the passport applications. One is the need for the majority of these to have new photos accompany them for processing. Be sure to have the pictures taken by someone well versed in what the government requires for passport photos.

When unsure about which USA Passport application to complete, conduct an Internet search. The government and other passport service companies have Web sites that have detailed information regarding the entire passport process from application to renewal. For added convenience, these sites contain links to all required documents.

USA Passport Application – Obtaining One May Be Easier Than You Would Think

When the time for an individual to get a passport arrives, the individual should not worry as completing all the necessary tasks will not take an extraordinarily long period of time. The individual who will only be traveling in North America should consider acquiring a passport card only, as it is less expensive than the booklet. Those traveling on plane or anywhere other than North America need to acquire a passport booklet before doing that. Either way, the individual will need to complete a passport application.

Individuals will need a passport booklet for all international travel, while a passport card can only be used for those planning to travel strictly within North America. The card will not be accepted for those traveling by air to these places, though. The card will look similar to a driver’s license, while the book is like a small pamphlet with a blue cover, unless an individual is a diplomat or a citizen-employee of the United States who happens to be working abroad.

As for the passport application, most people will need to complete Form DS-11. Individuals who have never had a passport before only have the option of filling out this form. They will need to make an appearance at a governmentally specified location.. For a list of the locations, check online at the government’s Web site.

A local post office will most likely be able to fulfill the needs of the application process. However, some post offices may not, so for a complete list of the acceptable government facilities, an individual should venture online and use his or her browser of choice to search. After the building has been found, an individual should collect all of the necessary documents into one place.

Once the proper application has been completed, an individual will need to present a form of proof of U.S. citizenship, a form of primary identification or a combination of acceptable secondary identification, a copied version of the identification, and two copies of the same photograph. As with most things in this society too, an individual will need to pay a fee. For the specific guideline on all of these, go online or call a local government office.

Those individuals who are filling out Form DS-82 do not have to make an appearance in a government-mandated facility. Only certain individual will meet the criteria for being allowed to mail information to renew their U.S. passport. The most recent passport of these individuals will be undamaged and able to be sent with the application, issued when an individual was over the age of sixteen, issued within the past fifteen years, and issued with the individual’s current name.

These forms are not difficult to fill out, but they will take time. Individuals should most likely fill it out at home, as it will ask information that may require additional research. Questions on such forms will range from name and social security number to family information and previous residences. However, be sure not to sign the form until you are in front of the agent for processing.

Other than fees, an individual really has no reason not to have a passport. It is a form of identification accepted in many locations where a form of identification is needed. In addition, since the Passport Application process is not that difficult, there really is no excuse not to go through it. You’ll have your United States passport in no time.

Getting A Pass Port To Travel To Cancun Is Playing It Safe

May 21st, 2010 No comments

That Mexican vacation is all booked and it is only one month to go until nothing but sun, surf, bikinis, and margaritas. Everything is planned, everything is taken care of, unless, wait…do I need a passport to Cancun? This question is not as simple as it seems, and although the answer is almost certainly yes, there are a few different factors to consider.

Since Cancun is not a part of the United States, one can safely assume that they would need a passport to travel there. However, while this will usually be the case, there can be exceptions. It is perfectly understandable how some people are very confused by the whole process because these laws were not even in place about a year ago.

In order to figure out if you will need a passport to Cancun, it is first important to understand the new passport laws. As of June 1st, 2009, passports are required for travel to Mexico, Canada and nearby Caribbean Islands. These laws apply to air, land and sea travel. Prior to these laws, passports were not required for land and sea travel to Mexico. International Mexican travel only required a valid driver’s license or other government issued identification.

Anyone who is considering traveling to Cancun for a trip will definitely need a passport. But hold on, this is where the exception comes in at. The rules are adjusted for people that are taking cruises. It is because of this very exception that much of the confusion about needing a passport started in the first place.

When a travel is on a closed loop trip to certain destination that leaves port from the United States, they are not required to have a passport. A closed loop is when the ship leaves out of a US port and then returns to the same port at the end of the trip. However, this exception has limitations for the different countries that it can be applied.

Approved countries that this rule applies to are such destinations as Bermuda, Canada and the Virgin Islands. To be safe, it is always recommended that you check with the State Department or your travel agent as they will both be up to date on the rules regarding the cruise ship itinerary destinations. A quick phone call can give some piece of mind.

Homeland Security is often cited as the reason passports are now necessary for travel to border countries. Although it can be an inconvenience, it is better to have safe borders and a minor hassle than porous borders and an easy pass. Since passports are always necessary for international flight, and always have been, anyone flying to Cancun likely will not notice a change. American citizens flying to and from Mexico are generally not subjected to a lot of scrutiny.

Anyone traveling to Cancun from the United States will almost certainly need to fill out a United States passport application. The only time a passport to Cancun is not necessary is when a person is traveling to Cancun in a closed loop cruise. Any other form of travel will require that a valid US passport is in hand or that person will risk not being able to enter the foreign country.

U.S. Passport Application – Getting A New Passport Form Is Simple

January 15th, 2010 No comments

Applying for a passport can be a confusing tangle of forms. Completing them correctly and providing the documentation requested can speed up your passport application. It can also save you several hours of repeat visits, and eliminate frustration.

Passports can be renewed by mail under certain conditions. If it was issued less than 15 years ago and is undamaged, you may not have to apply in person. Your current passport must also have been issued when you were 16 years of age or older. It should bear your current name, or you must furnish legal documentation of the name change.

Renewals by mail usually take a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks to process unless expedited service is requested. During summer months, the time can stretch to 10 or 12 weeks. The application and passport forms should be mailed using a method that allows you to verify delivery. It is also recommended that you use a waterproof mailer that will protect all items from damage and weather. Expedited renewals are normally processed in half the time as standard applications. There is an additional charge of $60 for expedited services.

If you have never had a passport, or if your old one is beyond the time frame of 15 years, you must appear in person. You must also make a personal application if under age 16 either at the present time or when the prior passport was issued. If your previous passport was stolen, lost, or damaged, you cannot renew by mail but must go in person to make the application. Name changes for which you do not have legal documentation also require that you complete the application process in person.

Typically, most people choose to apply at their local post office or office of the county clerk. There are several official passport agencies located across the country, but these are regionally based and may be quite distant from your home. Every office will keep different hours, so it is best to call ahead. Every one, however, will need the same types of documentation. You must prove you are a citizen of the United States by providing an official birth certificate or proof of naturalization. Consular reports or notice of birth can serve if you were born abroad and your parents were citizens of the U.S. If you have an undamaged passport, this will also serve to document citizenship.

You will also be required to prove your identity. A passport can serve for this purpose as well as your proof of citizenship. The most common documentation is a current driver’s license or state issued identification card. If your license was issued by a state other than the one in which you are making your application for passport, you will need a second form of identification. The agency will accept your social security card, your credit card, or your employer identification card. You must also provide a copy of all identification used for the application. This cannot be a duplex copy, or copy with dual sided printing.

You will need two color photographs of yourself. They must be identical and no more than 6 months old. Your appearance cannot vary significantly from the photograph. Each must be 2 x 2, taken against a white or nearly white background, and be a front view of your full face. The space between bottom of chin and top of head cannot be less than 1 inch or greater than 1-3/8 inches. You should dress in your normal manner for the picture, and if that includes a wig or glasses, they should be worn in the photograph. However, do not wear a hat or hair trim that hides the hairline.

For the typical adult traveling abroad, you should now have a good idea of what will be involved in obtaining your passport. Many applications are initially rejected because of a failure to provide the information at the time of application. Taking the necessary passport form with you will help your pass port application be approved with a minimum of effort and frustration. Special situations, such as children traveling abroad, have different requirements and are beyond the scope of this article on general new passport form information.
