A History of Orbea Mountain Bikes
One brand that is particularly well known in the field of mountain biking is Orbea mountain bikes. The business is based in the North of Spain in the Basque country, in a town called Mallavia.Today the company makes Orbea mountain bikes, Orbea road bikes and Orbea touring bikes.
Interestly this mountain bike company actually started life as a weapons and ammunition company. In the beginning Orbea made rifles, pistols and their cartridges.Orbea was famed throughout Spain for the weapons it made.Indeed, in the 1870s Orbea was a very important company in its region and was one of the most successful enterprises there.
Orbea continued making weapons all the way up until when the Spanish Civil War Ended when it was hit by a drop in demand. Things also changed in 1926 when the business split into two seprate companies following family problems. One of the businesses created by the split of the arms company moved into the mountain bike industry and Orbea mountain bikes were born.
As a well known and respected name in biking, the company has always sponsored and had strong links with cycling teams. Euskaltel-Euskadi and Xacobeo-Galicia are two of the high profile cycling teams with which Orbea has close ties. But since 2005 Orbea mountain bikes has also had its very own team.
Nowadays, the company sponsors many biking events throughout Europe and its products are often given as prizes in mountain biking events on the continent. Of the company’s current designs, a large proportion are made from carbon fibre which is a modern bike material. Many of their current bikes have frames made entirely of aluminium which is lightweight and very popular.
The future of Orbea mountain bikes seems very stable, especially considering the publicity obtained from sponsorship of high profile events. It supports and sponsors many of Spain’s biggest mountain biking events, which include many treks which are open to large numbers of members of the public. Another demonstration of their quality is the fact that they are sold all over the world.
