My mother and I will be travelling to Russia in August.

Both of us have valid Russian and South African passports.

We have lived outside Russia for over 20 years so we have the appropriate passports.

We will be going through Germany (intransit) to St Pietersburg.

We were told that we can use our Russian passports to get in and out of Russia and use our South African passports to leave South Africa to Germany and gain entry into Germany and South Africa on the way back after visiting Russia.

Is this true and is it done commonly without any problems?

I am planning a trip to Russia in early August. Now I've already been setup with a private stay visa for 3 months from a friend in Russia(only staying for 2 weeks) but unfortunately the original copy has not arrived and I'm not sure how long it will take.

I have all documents ready, picture, visa application filled, passport, etc according to the Russian Consulate by need original invite letter.. Would it be possible for me to sign up for a tourist visa(invite) instead to speed up the process? Would I need to provide hotel vouchers for this type of visa even though I plan to stay in a home? Please let me know Thanks...

The type of visa you mention in your post is called "private visa". It can be given to people who are going to pay a private visit to their relatives or friends in Russia. Unlike tourist visa which allows you to stay in Russia only for 1 month, private invitation and visa can be issued for up to 3 months. Usually it takes substantial period of time for a private party to get this type of invitation from Russian authorities - something between 2 weeks and 2 months.
The processing for private visa is the same as processing for any other type of visa and the price depends on how many entries you are allowed (single entry, double entry or multiple entry visa) and how fast you need your passport back. According to this, prices may vary from $181 (for single entry 10 business days processing) to $500 (for multiple entry same day processing). To process private visa you will have to provide the following documents:

1. Your actual passport with at least two blank visa-designated page. Passport must be valid for at least 6 months after intended departure from Russia;

2. One passport-size photograph;

3. Russian visa application form, completed and signed;

4.	The ORIGINAL invitation (in case of private invitation copy is not enough).

Dear Laura,

1. Regarding box 9, yes, in your case you should just leave this box blank.

2. Regarding the dates of entry and departure. Tourist visa to Russia can be issued for no longer than 30 days. But the dates of you travel are flexible as long if you enter and depart Russia WITHIN the dates of your visa. For example, if you are planning to go to Russia for, lets say, 2 weeks at the end of July you can put July 20 as the day of entry and August 18 as the day of departure. Then if you go, for example, from July 24 till August 8 you are absolutely fine. When you buy your tickets (if you are to buy those after your visa documents have been submitted to Russian Consulate) just make sure you do not arrive earlier or depart later than the dates on your application form. Before you documents have been submitted to Russian Consulate you can always call our travel manager and ask her or him to correct the dates on your form.

3. Regarding question 17, no, it is not necessary to call your insurance company. Russian Consulate does not require any proof of medical insurance from US citizens. If you are a citizen of EU though, you have to provide the copy of insurance card or to buy some insurance coverage especially for traveling to Russia.

4. Regarding mailing issues, yes, of course, you and your husband can send your forms to us together in the same envelope and they can be FedExed back to you together. That is exactly what you should do. We only need one payment for FedEx from the family members as long as you can receive you mail at the same address.

Please, do not hesitate to call us should you have any more questions. (212) 480-2233

[Russian Visa Forum] Few Questions about Visa Application for US Citizen

Hello,

My husband and I are getting ready to send in our forms, but have a few questions that need to be answered:

In box 9 on the Visa Application form for a US Citizen, it says "Russian institution or organization to be visited". My husband and I will be going to Moscow and St. Petersburg as tourists -- I don't think we're visiting any institutions or organizations. Should we leave this box blank?

Regarding the dates of entry and departure: we haven't purchased our airline tickets yet, so we're not 100% sure on when we will be arriving/leaving. Is it okay if we pad the entry and departure dates to assure that our visa is good for the whole time we're there (as long as we keep the total time under one month)?

Regarding question 17 -- medical insurance valid in Russia -- I have no idea if our medical insurance is valid overseas. Is this question important enough for me to call my insurance provider and ask?

And one last question: when my husband and I send our forms to you, can we send them together in the same envelope and can they be fedexed back to us together (I'm trying to save on shipping costs. :) )

Thanks for your help!

Laura :)

To obtain a Russian visa you first need to get an invitation.

Tourist Visas

This type of Russian visa can be valid for up to 1 month and are usually single-entry. The invitation comprises a tourist voucher and a reservation confirmation, which can only be issued by a Russian travel agency, registered in the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). Russiagateway.com can provide an invitation of this type for you.

Private/Homestay Visas

This type of Russian visa is for those who have relatives or friends in Russia able to get a Private Invitation. Since the procedure to acquire a Private Visa Invitation is time consuming and difficult (especially for your friends or relatives), we recommend traveling on a Tourist or Business visa.

Period of stay in Russia: From one day to a maximum of three months. It is valid for one entry only.

Visa Invitation: Private Invitation issued by the local department of the Passport & Visa Service (PVS, formerly OVIR) of the Russian Internal Ministry by the request of an individual.

Terms and price of Visa Invitation: Though the price is not high, the procedure may take up to three months.

Two pages, even if they are not next to each other is enough to apply for Russian visa (NOTE: make sure those are VISA pages, not AMENDMENTS pages). And the page that will remain clear in your passport + the one that has only one stamp should be enough for all the official stampes during your trip (if there are only 3 countries all together). Of course there is always a slight possibility that something will go wrong in the Consulate and they will need two pages instead of one (mistakes happen, not very often but they do). Also make sure that if you are planning to go to Russia, then to visit other countries (like Belarus or Ukraine) and then come back to Russia, you get a DOUBLE entry tourist visa - not a SINGLE entry one.

As far as I know you need to have a valid US visa or in your case I-94 card valid for at least 3 months after you departure from Russia. I suggest that you call the travel agency as they might be able to assist you despite the new Russian visa regulations. If they take your apllication thay can do a Russian visa in two or more buisness days. The faster you need your visa the more expensive it is. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Dear Yuli,

Unfortunately we don't assist with private invitations which are necessary for a home stay Russian visa but if your can get an invitation yourself and send it to us then we will be able to help you. Once the visa is ready we will fedex it back to your address, so that you don't have to come to the Russian Consulate. Regarding your kids, they should be mentioned in your invitation as accompanying family members and are required to have separate Russian Visas based on your inviattion.

Hi Jenny,

We believe the easiest way to go to Russia is on a tourist visa. The process generally takes about 10 business days, if you need expedited service you can get a ready visa in 3 , 2 or 1 business day depending on the service you choose. You don't need to stay in a hotel and we will be glad to assist you with the registration in Russia.
